Great Hobbies for Retirees

Great Hobbies for Retirees

Entering into retirement can be the start of a whole new chapter in your life. Once that you are there you will love the freedom and the time that is available. Unfortunately, it is heard over and over that when retirement happens it is great at the start. So much time to do what ever you like. Then once retirement has been in your life for a while boredom can hit.

What steps are retirees taking in preparation for retirement?
53% of retirees and pursuing hobbies and interests. 43% percent are getting involved in community activities. So what are you going to do?

I would advise that you start to plan your activities. Learn new things. Discover new hobbies. Develop a healthy outlook. Try not to attach your identity to the work you are doing at present.

Another important thing to do is to stay connected with your loved ones and friends. While still employed, you might not be spending as much time as you want to with them. Remember, jobs come and go, but relationships endure.

This blog is for people who may be in their retirement years or very close to those years and they and looking for something to occupy their time when retired other than daily television or the pets. I went on a search for hobbies that can be done in limited space, with minimal money. Now if this is not a problem I also found a hobbies that might appeal to the retirees of today.

Firstly I found container gardening. Some retirees live in units or flats due to not having to worry about lawns or large housing maintenance. If this is you and you have a small area to participate in a hobby, then container gardening may suit you. Limited space in your backyard should not stop you from planting vegetables in your garden. All you have to do is buy stater plants or seedlings to begin your garden. Remember to plant the seeds narrowly apart because this will get rid of the weeds. In a few weeks you will see your vegetable garden begin to prosper. Visit container gardening to find out more about this subject.

Another great hobby idea painting. I met a lovely retired man once and he loved to paint. He didn’t have the time in his working years but when he retired he explored this talent in so many creative ways. A talented artist could opt to start a creative arts centre to guide others for a fee, produce artistic products for sale or put up an arts resource centre. Any of these options would tap into the expansive network of contacts accumulated over career years. Now if you are a beginner painter or just want to start off on a smaller scale here is where to start. Go the the local hobby shop, Wall Mart, K-Mart or any other big store and purchase a painting starter kit. The variety of painting kits are endless.

Now finally I promised a hobby that may appeal to the retiriees of today and here is is:- Hobby Metal Casting.

One of the most fascinating old world metal crafts that has captured many people’s imagination is Hobby Metal Casting. Hobby Metal Casting has gone through a huge worldwide renaissance. New age practical information & basic technology coupled with easy to build home equipment and tools, empowers the hobby metal crafter to explore and create masterpieces in the home workshop.

So don’t let the wonderful retirement years go by without enjoying them. Find a great hobby that will interest you and that is an extension of your already known talents. Also, remember just because you are retired don’t feel you are intruding on your relatives and loved ones when you go to visit. You are not! They do appreciate seeing you so take up some of your time by dropping in on them.

If you can not find a hobby that suits you I completed a search in Amazon and found this book “Crafts and Hobbies”. I bought it myself. It is amazing. It has so many different hobby and craft ideas to explore. All hobbies and crafts in this book are detailed and have step by step instructions. I would highly recommend this book as it can bring an end to retirement boredom.
